More car thefts, despite arrests

Cars are still being stolen in Nelson, despite the arrest of two teenagers police believe were responsible for the majority of the recent thefts. Last Friday, two males were arrested in connection with the thefts, a 19 year old and a 16 year old, both of Nelson. Police say the offenders are searching for cars that are unlocked. They then take

On Friday night, a South Street resident had their white Holden ute stolen and there have been other thefts not thought to be related to the two teens. Among those was a Mitsubishi Triton ute from Dowell Wholesale Cars in Brightwater. The ute was found on the Spooners Range on Saturday, after going missing on

Rex gets his shed

Stoke’s Rex Lucas in his new “men’s shed” at Omaio Retirement Village, which was opened last week after a petition was launched. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

A mini “mens shed” has finally been given the green light at a Stoke Retirement Village, but only after a petition and a plea to head office. When Rex Lucas and his wife Pam were looking to downsize, they asked Omaio Retirement Village if Rex’s tools could come with them and be set up in a men’s shed. The answer was ‘yes’ and the couple moved in, along with Rex’s tools. Then Oceania Group, which owns the village, changed their mind, said it was a health and safety risk and told Rex he couldn’t put his tools in the village garage. Rex then lent his tools to the Whakatu Menz Shed, which has been trying to get off the ground for more than a year, but continued to push

After entering the track late in the day, the couple had problems finding the route in darkness and horrendous weather caused one of the party to become hypothermic. The journey will cut travel time for commuters destined to Palmerston North after Air New Zealand cut their service from Nelson in November last year. The flight to Paraparaumu takes 40 minutes, followed by an hours drive to Palmerston North. Arrests after car thefts: Two people are in custody following a spate of car thefts in Nelson. More car thefts, despite arrests FROM PAGE 1 Wednesday night. Vanessa Gilbertson, from Dowell, says police are not necessarily linking the theft to the other recent incidents. She says the $12,000 ute was found stripped of its engine, radiator, tailgate, spare tyre and tool box, as

well as having it’s dashboard and windows smashed up. “We’re not happy, they’re just mongrels, the insurance company believe it was targeted for the engine because it not a common vehicle to be stolen.” For more on this story, visit

for permission to set up his tools in a shed. That included a petition signed by residents of three Stoke retirement villages. So Oceania did another backflip and decided to act. The company’s CEO, Earl Gasparich, authorised a new shed to be built and was at the village on Wednesday to offically open it. Rex says for the last 15 years of his working life he was a dial-a-handyman, doing anything and every-

thing, and in his retirement, creating folding tables and stools has become his craft. “I think as much as anything else it gives us something .co.nz to do, I’m sorry, but I get sick of sitting watching TV or reading a book,” says Rex. Rex, along with six other experienced residents, will be on hand to supervise when other residents are using machines. He says there has been interest from residents of Oceania’s two other Stoke villages and even a handful of female residents.

Out-going museum CEO Peter Millward says the region should have a museum under one roof, not “five miles apart”, as it is now. Peter announced his retirement last Friday after seven years as the chief executive at the Nelson Provincial Museum. Currently, the museum has two buildings, the research facility at Isel Park in Stoke and the exhibition and education facility at Trafalgar St. He told Nelson Weekly that the museum’s current buildings are its most pressing issue. “The research facility is unfinished business from my point of view and something needs to be done urgently. When they moved the exhibition and education part into town they actually broke the museum into two pieces, and some of the problems we face now are undoubtedly caused by that.” He says having the museum in Trafalgar St is important, so he’d like to see the research facility moved close by. “But it’s not going to happen without some capital input and the two councils are both facing their own infrastructure issues, but the museum is now in

A driver clocked doing more than 150kmh says she was late to pick up her Thai takeaways. That driver received an immediate roadside suspension for 28 days and will be appearing in the Nelson District Court shortly.

Police say an increasing number of drivers are taking unacceptable risks with speed and as a result a number have had their licences suspended for demerit points or had roadside suspensions. Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says over Queen’s Birthday weekend speed-

ing drivers was easily the biggest issue officers faced on the road. “Some of the speeds we have detected recently are just ludicrous. There are a number of drivers on the road putting other innocent road users’ lives at extreme risk and they have no right to do that,” he says.

The “living and breathing collection” of classic motorbikes on Haven Rd will take another almighty breath this week when 12 new bikes are revealed. The incredibly rare bikes, worth around $2 million, were recently bought from auction houses in the United States and shipped to Nelson, where they were reassembled and are now ready for display. NZ Classic Motorcycles operations manager John Shand says the bikes will be unveiled at a special evening next week. “They came from auction houses in the US. There was an old guy, his name was EJ Cole, and he was 89 years old. He had 215 motorbikes and found out he couldn’t get his leg across most of them, so sold them.” John says some of the current bikes will make way for the new additions, in keeping with owners Tom and Heather Sturgess’ wishes of a “living collection”.

“We don’t call this place a museum, we hate that word, because that’s where you find fossils. This is a collection and it’s a living collection. You’re never going to come and get bored, there will always be new bikes and new attractions.” Included in the new additions is a “Ner-A-Car”. It was designed for ladies so they could step through it. The biggest attraction will most likely be the Britten “precurser”, the bike built before the iconic Britten. John says very few people have seen it up close. “This is the bike that nearly won at Daytona in 1991. But the race winner on the warm down lap did this big wheelie, looked at the Kiwi riders and said, ‘ha ha ha, your bike isn’t fast enough’. “John Britten was rather peeved at this antic so went away to develop a faster bike – the Britten. You know the rest.” NZ Classic Motorcycles is open to the public six days a week.

Young professionals after fresh blood Andrew Board

Nelson Young Professionals are after some new committee members, with the current president set to leave the region. Michelle Byczkow has been the head of the networking group for two years, but is heading off to London and says the group would like some fresh blood.

“The nature of the group means that we have people come and go, so we’re looking for the next wave of young professionals.” Nelson Young Professionals was founded in 2009 and encourages anyone who would like to meet new people or enjoy the events they host to come along.

The biggest event on the NYP calendar is the winter ball that last year attracted around 150 people. Michelle says when she arrived in Nelson to work at a local law firm Michelle she knew three people, all very Byczkow loosely. “But since I joined NYP I’ve meet some great friends and it’s given me a

whole network of people to hang out with.” Currently, NYP has six committee members, Michelle says she’d like to see that grow to around seven or eight. “New people bring in fresh ideas and we’ve had a great committee for three years now, but some new people would be great.” To find out more about NYP see www.nyp. co.nz or email info@nyp.co.nz

Nominated Nelsonians benefit from Nomin-eat A group of community-minded cooks are helping people through tough times with their very own version of meals on wheels. The group of 20, featuring 10 adults and 10 youth, met at Destiny Church and were kicking around ideas about how they could help the community, when the idea of “Nomin-eat” was settled upon. Nomin-eat asks for nominations through its Facebook page for those who could use a free meal. The group then cooks a batch of 50 meals and delivers it to those who they feel are the most deserving. Founding member Joni Nacagilevu says last month they cooked enough lasagne for 50 main meals

and then delivered them over the next week. He says nominees included those who were recovering from surgery, solo parents with plenty of kids to feed and some who were just going through a tough time financially. “Sometimes, people just need that hand and hopefully this can just take that pressure off. It’s not a hand-out where we pity them, it’s just a hand-along,” he says. Joni says the project is funded by its members at the moment but he’d like to attract sponsorship in the future to help it grow. He says nominations are open for two weeks, then the group get together one night and cook enough food for the 50 meals and

Nelson fans at centre of slot car comeback

Slot car racing is making a comeback, with New Zealand’s biggest ready-to-run slot car event being held in Hope this weekend. Tony Cook has always had a passion for slot car racing, it started back in 1967 when he stumbled across a commercial raceway in Bolt Road, Tahunanui. From that moment on, he was hooked and used to bike down to the raceway and pay fifty cents to race cars all afternoon. Over the years, time and family commitments got in the way, but the love of racing never left him. Once a very popular hobby and sport, sadly, there are no commercial race tracks in New Zealand nowadays at all, however Tony says the sport is making a resurgence. “Around 12 years ago, the Nelson Slot Car Racing Club went into hiatus, but a friend approached me about four years ago and said that we should start it up again and the club awoke from its slumber and it just all grew from there,” says Tony. There are now 18 members in the Nelson Slot Car Club, with

Age no barrier for table tennis players

Simon Bloomberg

Age is no barrier to sport, in fact it is a prerequisite for players attending Table Tennis Nelson's social seniors group at Saxton Stadium with their oldest member, Lionel Wells, turning 95 in October. The group, which meets every Monday and Friday morning, has about 45 players enjoying the exercise and social interaction. Although many of the players are new to the sport, that certainly can't be said about Lionel, who has been playing for an incredible 82 years. And that probably makes him the most experienced player in the country. "I started playing when I was 11 or 12 and haven't stopped," Lionel, who is a retired fisherman,

says. "When I started in Nelson we played in the Sports Hall, but we've moved around since then to places like the YMCA and Ngawhatu, and now Saxton Stadium. "I used to play competitively. I was ranked No2 in my age-group in New Zealand at one stage, but now I just play because it's good exercise and it's a good way of meeting people." However, Lionel hasn't finished his competitive playing days just yet, competing in the last two South Island Masters games in Nelson, winning silver in the mixed doubles with Thelma Mathieson and two bronze medals in 2013. And he hopes to line up in this year's Master Games which start in Nelson on September 26. "I hope to play at this one as well

If I'm fit, I'll be playing mixed doubles with my daughter [Lynette Goulding]." Table Tennis Nelson committee member Kay Hazeldine says the social senior's session is proving

popular and has grown over the years. The majority of players are "50-plus" with a wide range of abilities. "We even have a couple of players in wheelchairs and they are pretty handy," she says.

RONALD MCDONALD FUNDRAISER: Angela and Kayla White surrounded by Kayla’s Stoke School classmates, Aiza-Lyna Lolohea, Michaela Buys, Ofaloto Piukala, Destiny Hewetson-Talamaivao, Lily Gribble, Brienna Cross and teacher Kirsty Jones. Last Friday, Stoke School held a mufti day to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House which has become a second home for Angela and her daughter Kayla, who suffers from a number of illnesses, one being chronic lung disease. Kayla’s previous school, Kiwi Treasures Preschool, also held a fun dress-up day to raise money. Kayla wasn’t meant to reach the age of five and has been through 12 surgeries since she was born. However, while she is doing well at the moment, winter can be a scary time as a simple cold could prove fatal. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Habitat for Humanity, Tuesday, May 26: Habitat for Humanity is grateful for the response from Nelsonians towards their second-hand homeware store. Chairman of the Nelson branch, Rob Silcock, says donations have been better than expected and they are growing a good collection of homeware items from beds, sofas, tables, chairs, dishwashers, ovens and even an old organ. There is still a lot of work to be done, with the manager’s position to be filled from one of 13 applicants and then the homeware items need to be sorted, ready for sale. Organisers would like to say thank you to Nelsonians for their donations. Founder’s Book Fair, Tuesday, June 2: Organisers of the Founders Book Fair were thrilled with this year’s results. The fair is a major fundraiser for the park and now the total has come in; a list is being compiled of projects that the park would like to undertake. There were 3000 banana boxes of books that locals managed to work their way through from May 30 until June 7, leaving just 100 books unsold. This year’s fair managed to raise over $128,000 and organisers would like to thank those who donated books, their loyal customers, and volunteers; many of whom were completely new to helping run the fair. Nayland Kindy, Tuesday, May 5: Organisers of Nayland Kindergarten’s annual fundraiser were overwhelmed with the support of local businesses and said it was great seeing local ladies and mothers having an enjoyable night out. The Girls Night Out! and Fashion Show is the kindergartens major fundraiser for the year which managed to raise just under $5000, beating last year’s total of $3000. Around 160 people attended the evening with funds going towards the development of the children’s outdoor area.

New flag debate hits Nelson Locally Owned and Operated

“It’s like a married man wanting to marry another wife before he’s even divorced,” yells one man across a room full of people crowded around tables. He is one of nine people, in a room of 45, who opposed changing the New Zealand flag at last week’s Flag Consideration Meeting in Tahunanui. The rest of the room is made up people supporting a new flag and fence-sitters as they discuss what a flag means to them. Of the 45 in attendance, eight flew the current flag at their own home, six flew it at their business and three worked for a government department that flies the flag.

Flag Consideration Panel deputy chair, Kate de Goldi, sat at one table divided in fierce conversation. “Our table had bracing discussion, it was vigorous, divided and heated, and very good for me to hear as a panel member. You have to sort of anatomise their passion when you’re charged with listening to the community and working out what the various streams of arguments are.” Nelson RSA president Barry Pont is one of the nine in the room opposed to changing the flag. “We [the RSA] are totally opposed to changing the flag at the moment, mainly because it’s what we’ve gone overseas and

the question should be ‘yes, you want a new flag or no, you don’t, not ‘which one do you like best?’, that’s not democracy, they’re jumping the gun.” Tim Bayley has submitted his own design for the new flag along with partner Janet Southwick. “We lived in Canada for a number of years in the seventies. We saw the flag they had then when it was very flash and new. Canada hasn’t fallen over, it’s gone from strength to strength and it’s one of the most recognisable flags worldwide.” The education process will go right up until the referendums take place at the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016.

Local First National wins big at awards

Real estate is what First National Real Estate Richmond and Nelson does best, and they have the awards to prove it. The entire office recently took part in the First National Australasian Convention in Queenstown this year, and every real estate agent that went came back an award winner. Four hundred offices from Australia and 59 from New Zealand gathered for the annual convention, which is not only an educational event on the First National calendar but recognises the hard work and performance of Australasia’s real estate agents. “It’s down to the dedication of the individuals who have performed so well, and it means that there are hundreds of satisfied buyers and sellers who have interacted with First National. Our thanks go to them for trusting us, because without those people we wouldn’t all be awardwinning real estate agents,” says First National Real Estate Richmond and Nelson director, Mark Rumsey.

The winning agents from First National Real Estate Richmond and Nelson are, from left, Deborah Stevenson, Roy Tomlinson, Julian Kett, Steve Thomas, Briah Walker, Mark Rumsey and Helen Ruston. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

9 Vivian Place Tahunanui 0508 546 4111 Wondering where your local access equipment experts have disappeared too?

The Team at Aimex Hydraulics support Access-Hire in their new premises. Hydraulic power’s changed a bit since it was first used several thousand years ago. And in 21st Century Nelson nobody knows fluid mechanics and hose fittings better than Hydraulink and Aimex.

www.aimex.co.nz

Don’t worry they haven’t gone far and they’re still more than capable of helping you out when you need excellent service to reach those high up places. From their previous head quarters in Wakatu Industrial Estate, Access Hire have consistently provided second-tonone service, but a change in location to 9 Vivian Pl in Tahunanui has meant they are now situated alongside their partnering businesses, Safe Site Fencing and Moveables. However, everything else has remained exactly as before, with the same staff and same service that their clients have become accustomed to. Access Hire is 100 per cent locally-owned and operated, and those who

make up the company are dedicated to providing their customers with nothing but the best in access equipment. The team are experts and professionals in their field and will go to any lengths to help you get whatever job you have, done. This includes recommending the perfect piece of equipment to make quick work of any height that is restricting you and providing you with equipment that is not only good quality, but well serviced and maintained. No matter what project you have in mind, they guarantee you’ll receive the best machine to safely complete your job, no matter where or what height. So what exactly do Access Hire have in their yard? Whether you need a scissor lift, cherry picker or knuckle boom; if your job site is out of reach, they have a machine just waiting to assist you. There is a selection of electric scissor lifts from six to ten metres, rough terrain scissor lifts up to 12 metres and electric or diesel knuckle booms up to 21 metres.

For the Access Hire team, convenience is everything, and they make it their number one goal to help make your project as easy as possible, which means making it simple to get started. Depending on your requirements, they can organise to have your equipment transported by their own delivery team to the site when you need it, and when you’re done, just give them a call to come and pick it up, it’s as easy as that. If you want to transport the equipment yourself, some machines can be taken via trailer or towed behind a suitable vehicle, just call ahead to sort out the best way to get the equipment you require. Another important thing to know is that Access Hire can organise to have Elevated Work Platform (EWP) Training courses so you feel safe when

Opinion

Stolen bikes concern police: Husband and I rescued two from a creek in Richmond on the weekend, have taken them into Richmond police station. Tina Guy.

Rate rise 'disappointing': It is disappointing that even those Nelson councillors who campaigned at the election on keeping rate rises reasonable have opted for increases well above the inflation rate. This is an attack on the middle class and undermines the low-wage and low income ratepayer constituency in Nelson. With only a very few exceptions, like Cr. Tim Skinner, councillors voted for almost every non-core service spending item to finance pet projects and wish lists. Meanwhile, our infrastructure is badly in need of improvement or repair. As long as councillors are voted in with attention only to name recognition, Nelson will get the local government it deserves, and the rates will double again in less than ten years. Dan McGuire. Modellers Pond, should it stay or go: It just needs a good clean and to stay cleaned, imagine how beautiful it could look. Diana Sim.

Keep it an area kids love to go to and see the ducks and other birds. It's been there since I was a kid. Just keep it clean. Aleisha Brunell. Keep it! Mike Roberts. Filled in and used, keeping it that way is silly as no one uses it. Donna Jan. Can't believe the council have still not upgraded this! It would be lovely fixed up with some clean water for kids to float boats, etc. Totally all for it getting done up. Kristyn Musson. I think it's important to keep it there. It's far too easy to get rid of things when, with a bit of effort, they can be revived! We need to do everything we can to coax youngsters outdoors. Come to that, I know a lot of adults who enjoy it, too. Philippa Foes-Lamb. It has so many great memories for lots of people. Keri Williams. Keep it and clean it. Shane Scott.

Let the members of the modellers have a free hand to use common sense to fix the problem with a little help from the ratepayers. John Sauer. Cheapest entertainment for children in town, please don't ruin it. Why not put paid workers in there to help clean it out. Kimberley Saunders. A concrete pool for toddlers, like at the botanical gardens in Chch, would be great!!!! Lisa Dudley. When it is a pond it can't be used that much because it can't be kept clean, fill it in. Or make it an inground trampoline. Do something different with it. I have never really seen the pond clean, make it more appealing by making it something people can use. Even a small skate bowl. Ema Posa. Fill half of it in so more room and better area for putting boats. Divide remaining pond area into more and challenging exciting water way for boat users. Keep it clean and you have a fun place to use. Julie Roberts. Email: editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Waimea West owner-breeder George Hill also had success when Cullen's Lady recorded her maiden win on the first day of the meeting. However, Cullens Lady couldn't back up on Sunday, finishing sixth in the Jennex Handicap Pace, one place ahead of George's other horse and race favourite Arizona Atom. The day improved for Stoke race fans Sue and Paul Bromell who won a family holiday to Hanmer Springs in the Lucky Losing Ticket Draw. Things

Local winners on and off the race track Wakefield's Robert Stuart may be the official trainer of Dana Dawn which won the More FM Mobile Pace at the Nelson Harness Racing Club's Winter meeting on Sunday, but it was his wife Sue who played a key role in the win. The Stuarts completed a successful meeting with Dana Dawn finishing second on the first day before winning by three-quarters of length on Sunday. It was Dana Dawn's first win from nine starts and Robert says Sue was largely responsible for preparing the three-year-old gelding for its maiden win. "I'd been really busy at work up until we finished in May, so Sue was doing all the track work with him – it's been a good partnership," Robert says. "Sue deserves most of the credit and so does (driver) Samantha Ottley - she's driven him four times now and all four have been great drives." Robert and Sue race Dana Dawn, who they lease from Teapot Valley owner-breeder Wayne Jennings. Wayne quali-

were looking bleak for Sue and Paul, who had only two small collects between them, when one of Sue's many losing tickets was drawn out of the Car Company car after race 10. "I put at least 15 tickets in the draw," I'd only had one small collect on the Cup but winning the trip makes up for that," Sue says. The feature race for the day, the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Winter Cup, was won by Destined For Glory who also won the Winter Cup Prelude on Friday. Destined for Glory was driven by Methven reinsman Ricky May, who had a remarkable seven wins at the two-day meeting.

Waimea and Wanderers march on There's a clear theme emerging from this season's Car Company division one rugby competition – it's a two horse race. Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers once again had big wins on the weekend, disposing of Marist (3017) and Stoke (55-9) respectively, making this Saturday's clash between the two even more exciting. Add the fact the match will also double as the Tasman Trophy final and rugby fans need to look no further than Jubilee Park this Saturday for the game of the round. The clash between the two heavy-weights of Nelson Wakatu Hotel Marist flankrugby kicks off at 3pm. er Dan Hytongue on the In the other match of the charge against Waimea Old Boys at Trafal- round, Kahurangi beat gar Park. Federal young guns learn tough lesson

Federal Black player Brady Machen passes the ball off, despite attention from a Arotea Kiwi player. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.

The young guns of Federal Black had the chances, but not the nous, to overcome Marlborough side Arotea Kiwi at Saxton Field on Saturday. The four-team premier grade is dominated by Tasman this year, which is undefeated after three rounds, but has had a couple of close calls with draws against Federal Titans. Tasman are favourites to take out the title this year, according to Nelson Hockey development officer Craig Brett. “Tasman are a strong team with guys who have national hockey league experience, so they are the team to beat.” Federal Titans are made up mainly of older players, with the club’s other team, the top emerging talent. Last year Federal won the competition with a combination of the two teams. There are five senior mens hockey grades in Nelson and five womens grades. In the women’s top grade, Tasman and Federal are the two top teams.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Winter is hotting up! Fishing around top of the south area in winter is awesome. It seems to get better and better as it gets colder. If you don't have a reasonable size boat to get up round Durville island or out further-a-field, then book a charter trip to get out to the unreal scenery and variety that the outer sounds areas have to offer. In early winter, some of the species breed and other go into deeper waters to "hibernate" in the water that actually stays warmer the deeper it is. This is when fish school up in huge numbers in areas of substantial food sources and their feeding habits change to adapt to the conditions. Kingfish, snapper, groper, trevally, tarakihi, john dory, warehou are just some of the species that frequent the same areas at this time. Get some advice from the local fishing shop staff, buy some reasonable gear and get out and enjoy the Tasman Bay off season, "out in the deep". So if someone asks you to go fishing

out deep, then take a quick cement pill and get up early, get your thermals on, grab some expensive jigs and sinkers and have an awesome day out! If you catch some good fish that is a bonus. Then offer to pay your way with travel costs, as its not cheap to own a boat and tow vehicle nowadays. Winter weather can provide some very settled days and this is reflected when those days fall during the week and I hear a mate say we will be the only boat out there, and that night they report back to say 12-20 boats up there. With all this increased pressure on our local fishery, I must encourage fishos to only take what they need for a feed for them and their immediate family. Some days fishing can be hot, and not every fish needs to be taken back home, with catch and release another great option, including the 'feel good factor' of watching those hard fighting fish head back down to the depths after a great battle. Enjoy our 'hot' winters.

best defensively when they limited Prices to only four goals in the third quarter, when Di’s radar went astray. Rival’s Janine McCarthy had good body positioning for the rebound to deny Prices a second opportunity. Prices goal defence Rachel Potrykus worked tirelessly – she read play well, gained two clean intercepts, and a number of deflections and was a power house rebounder as she had eight to her name. She was also a competent ball carrier, while wing defence Sheryl Hockey was keen to attack the ball. Prices left their best until last when they outscored Rival 8-7, only to come out on the wrong side of the ledger 27-30, however it was enough to gain them a bonus point.
